Staff Sergeant Brian Keith Miller, 37, Pendleton, died August 2, 2008, in Iraq.

He was born November 9, 1970, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Staff Sergeant Miller graduated from Pendleton Heights High School in June 1990. He entered the Indiana Army National Guard on May 18, 1989, as a 44B Metal Worker. Staff Sergeant Miller was assigned to Company D HM, 738th Maintenance Battalion in Indianapolis. Staff Sergeant Miller later moved to 1413th Engineer Detachment in Edinburgh, Indiana as a vehicle mechanic and a welder. He later served time with Company C HM, 38th Main Support Battalion as a welder and vehicle mechanic. Staff Sergeant Miller had deployments in support of Operation Vigilant Relief in Mississippi for Hurricane Katrina. He was also activated to help support security operations in Atlanta, Georgia during the 1996 Olympics. Staff Sergeant Miller arrived in the Theater of Operations on March 8, 2008, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom where he fulfilled the duties of a vehicle mechanic.

He was a truck commander for over 20 combat logistics patrols in the Iraq Theater of operation. Staff Sergeant Miller also worked as a full-time technician with the Indiana Army National Guard. Staff Sergeant Miller’s awards include the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal with 5 Oak leaf clusters, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, IRAQI Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award. He is survived by his wife, Becky Ellsworth Miller of Pendleton; children, Nikki Miller and Austin Miller; mother, Donna Danforth Cook; sister, Tammy Osalear; brother, Kevin Miller and a special friend, his dog Saddie.

He was preceded in death by his father, Glen Miller, and a brother, Kenny Miller. Visitation will be from 4-8:00 PM on Monday, August 11, 2008, at Pendleton Heights High School.
