Sister Virginia Hasson, RSMSister Virginia Hasson, RSM, age 82, a member of the Sisters of Mercy, Mid-Atlantic, died on April 9, 2020, at Bryn Mawr Hospital, in Bryn Mawr, PA. Sister Virginia entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1955 after graduating from West Philadelphia Catholic High School for Girls. Initially an elementary school teacher, she taught students with special needs at St. Katherine School in Overbrook where she also served as vice-principal. After earning a Masters in Counseling Psychology at Marywood College in Scranton, Sister joined the faculty at Gwynedd Mercy College (now University) where she served for twelve years, eventually becoming chairperson of the Education Department. She received her PhD in Educational Administration from Fordham influence as an “educator of educators” extended from Philadelphia to Thailand and Africa. As an education coordinator for Jesuit Refugee Services (JRS) for six years, she ministered at camps for Cambodian, Vietnamese and Sudanese refugees and started an overseas tutorial program to further their education. She also served as a consultant to the JRS International Office in Rome and as a program officer for six countries in Southern 1994, at Georgian Court University in Lakewood, NJ, Sister taught then served as Interim Dean of their graduate school. In 2000, she was elected Vice-President of the Regional Community of Merion. Most recently she volunteered as a grant writer for the Sisters of Mercy Mid-Atlantic and as a tutor at Mercy Neighborhood Ministries in Philadelphia.A lively storyteller, Sister Virginia had a generous spirit which delighted in the company of others. A gentle woman of faith, she was a compassionate listener who had a strong sense of adventure. An avid witness to the mission of Mercy, she worked diligently to educate people in is survived by her sisters, Sister Mary Hasson, RSM, Margaret Hayburn (Thomas), Joan Bell (George), her nieces and nephews and their children. She was pre-deceased by her brothers Thomas and John.
