Sister of Providence Sr. Maria Assumpta McGrath died on March 9, 2018 in the 69th year of her religious life. Born Mary Elizabeth McGrath in Holyoke, MA, the sixth of nine children of Joseph J. and Emaline (Barbeau) McGrath. She graduated from Ascension High School in Worcester, MA and then entered the Sisters of Providence in 1949. Her younger sister Cecelia entered the congregation two years later.Sister Maria Assumpta began working in the X-ray Department at Mercy Hospital in Springfield in 1952 and graduated from the Mercy Hospital School of X-ray Technology in 1957. She remained at Mercy Hospital until she moved to Our Lady of Providence Children’s Center, working as a Cottage Supervisor from 1959 to 1961. She resumed ministering as an X-ray technologist for almost half a century at several hospitals: Mercy Hospital in Springfield; St.
