Sophie M. Murtha, 91 of Newington, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2015, at Jefferson House. She was the widow of the late John Murtha, who passed in 1977. Born in New Britain, to the late John and Katherine (Kukulka) May, she lived most of her life in Newington. Sophie belonged to St. Mary Church in Newington and was a member of the Woman’s Auxiliary at the Polish American Club, also serving as Past Secretary. She was also active with the AARP at the Senior Center. Before her retirement, Sophie worked for the Town of Newington as a payroll secretary. Sophie leaves her children, Anita Shaffer of Newington, Paula Alkas and her husband David, of Berlin, Arthur Fox and his wife Brigid, of West Hartford; brother, Theodore May of Newington; sister, Dorothy Nugent and her husband Russell, of Maine; five grandchildren, Christine Nunes, Garrett Fox, Nathan Fox, Mitchell Fox and Evan Fox as well as three great grandchildren, Sophie Davillier, Gracen, and Matthew Fox. Besides her parents and husband, Sophie was predeceased by her siblings: Edward, Joseph, Stanley and Vincent May, Genevieve Hutt and most recently, her son-in-law, Richard Shaffer.
