Sofia Guajardo Vela

September 30, 1929 – June 8, 2016

Corpus Christi, TX –

Sofia Guajardo Vela, 86, arrived at her heavenly home on June 8, 2016. She was born in Pawnee, Texas on September 30, 1929 to Manuel and Lucia Guajardo. Sofia was known for her witty sense of humor, loving heart, and awesome tortillas. There was always something good cooking at Sofie’s house. She was an accomplished seamstress and had recently taken up art as a hobby.

After working most of her young life to help support her extensive family, Sofia met the love of her life. A young pastor, fresh from the Seminary, Rev. Felix Vela stole her heart. God gave them 62 wonderful years of marriage.

Sofia had a strong work ethic and successfully managed various careers ultimately earning her GED and working as a Certified Nursing Assistant until her retirement.

Sofia is preceded in death by her two infant sons, David and Daniel Vela; husband, Rev. Felix Vela; her mother and father; siblings, Guadalupe Guajardo, Paula Guajardo, Maria Garza, Ramona Pena, Francis Pena and Dolores Santos; and son-in-law, Rodney Carter.

She is survived by her daughter, Diana Vela Carter; two grandsons, James Ellis Hughes and Samuel Ellis Hughes; and former son in law, Leonard Ellis Hughes. Also survived by her brother Manuel Guajardo (Maria), Hope Denney (Jerry), Maria Magdalena Gonzales, Lucy Valdez; and various nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Cimarron Place Nursing home and the Legacy Hospice team in Corpus Christi. Special thanks to Dr. George Benavidez, hospice nurse Lottie Crofton, and social worker Victoria Lozano for their professional care, love, and kindness.
