Shirley Gwendolyn Terry Morgan [Ma Shirley], 82, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at Hope Hospice & Palliative Care of RI in Providence, RI. She was born in Apex, NC on October 17, 1933, to John Edward Terry and Jessie Allen Terry.
Shirley is survived by her son, Professor Elmo Terry-Morgan, Brown University, Providence, RI, brother Earl Douglas Terry of Apex, NC, loving niece Geraldine Morgan Alston and loving nephew Christopher Washington of Peekskill, NY, beloved daughters/friends Marilyn Bowser DeRouseau of Greenburgh, NY, Reverend Dorothy N. Clark of Durham, NC, and Clarice LaVerne Thompson of Central Falls, RI, devoted caregivers: Carol-Ann Johnson, Nancy Harris, Maya Breuer, Sylvia Ann Soares, Rose Weaver, and Theodore Fleming of RI, Deacon Harold Murphy and Deaconess Debra Murphy of NC, and the staff of the Fresenius Medical Care Providence Dialysis Center.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ellmore “Mike” Morgan, son Terry Glenn Morgan, and siblings: Louise, John, Gladys, Lenn Ray, and Archie.
Shirley was a retired teaching assistant, reading specialist and tutor, having worked in the Greenburgh Central School District #7 in NY, and the Mount Pleasant School in Pleasantville, NY. She was a dedicated supporter of Black Theatre, serving as a volunteer and “mother” of the Pyramid Ensemble of Westchester County, NY, the National Black Theatre of Harlem, NY, and the Department of Africana Studies’ Rites and Reason Theatre of Brown University, Providence, RI.
