Shirley Simmons, 81, of Bethlehem passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday July 11, 2018 while in the care of the St. Luke’s Hospice House. She was the daughter of the late John and Natalie Tomlin of Greenwood Virginia. Shirley was the wife of Gary Simmons with whom she shared 55 years of marriage, the mother of Kim Wright, the mother-in-law of John Wright, and grandmother of Ian and Benjamin Wright. She was a graduate of Albemarle High School and attended the Jefferson School of Commerce in Charlottesville Virginia. Her career as a secretary and office manager included working for law and medical offices in Charlottesville, and then working twenty six years at Lehigh University until her retirement. She often acted as a surrogate mother to graduate students, both foreign and domestic, who passed through the office.

Shirley and Gary moved to Bethlehem in 1970, and over the ensuing years she was a member of many groups within Welcome Wagon, a gourmet group that is still active. She was a member of the Lehigh Women’s Club and joined a bridge group, which is still playing together after 45 years.

Shirley will be missed by all who knew her.
