Shirley (Levine) Boam, 80, of Middletown, daughter of the late Samuel and Helen (Kessler) Levine, died Monday, October 26th at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown. Shirley was the devoted wife of Sidney Boam for the past 30 years; her first husband, John Stern, died when Shirley was 38. She was the loving mother of her children: Keith Stern and his wife, Elisabeth of Newton, MA, Marta Johnson and her husband, Doyle of Austin, TX, and Joan Lorah and her husband, Marc of East Hampton, CT; was the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren and the older sister of William Levine and his wife, Maryl of Bethesda, MD. Besides her parents and first husband, she was predeceased by her son, Steven Stern. Shirley loved music. For many years she sang with the ‘Middletuners’ of Middletown. She delighted in giving impromptu performances on bus tours and cruises, singing such favorites as “New York, New York” and “There’s No Business Like Show Business”. Shirley worked in retail at Lerner’s Furs and Kabels where she was known and loved by all her customers for her cheerful disposition. She was a long time, active member of Adath Israel Synagogue, and an avid participant in Middletown’s cultural opportunities. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and family members for her positive, loving attitude, her joie d’vivre, and her sweet spirit.
