Shirley A. Hartman, 76, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at Elkhart General Hospital at 7:12 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, following an extended illness.

She was born July 26, 1938, in New Carlisle, to the late Ralph and Ethel (Wright) Richardson.

She later married John W. Hartman in Elkhart in 1964, where he passed away in 1993.

Surviving are her daughters, Deborah (Allen) Hatton, Ruby (Greg) Sierra and Sherry (John) Galvin, all of Elkhart; sons Casey (Sandy) Richardson of Goshen, Michael (Lisa) Richardson of Elkhart and Gary Lee Hartman of Orlando, Fla.; sisters Marge Crawford of Elkhart and Wava (Charles) Apelgreen and Dolly Redd, both of Lakeville; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by seven brothers and one sister.

Shirley’s smiling face has been recognized throughout Elkhart at the various Burger King restaurants for the past 30 years. Besides her warm smile and the kind words she had for every customer she served, Shirley will be best remembered for her fanatical and undying allegiance to the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish and her love for her family, especially her grandchildren. She was also an avid Tony Stewart NASCAR fan.
