Shelby was born December 17, 1926, in Varina, Iowa to Harold and Helena Hunt. In 1947, he married his high school sweetheart, Evelyn; a marriage that lasted over 65 years.
Shelby served in Europe during World War II and later attended college on the G.I. Bill. He attended college in Waxahachie, TX before moving to WNMU in Silver City. He gained his B.A., M.A. in Teaching and Ed Specialist degrees.
Shelby, Evelyn, and their family moved to Deming in 1954 where he took a job offer as a teacher at Martin Elementary School where he later served as the principal. He also taught at Deming Jr. High School and Memorial Elementary School.
Simultaneous to working for the school system, Shelby also worked for the U.S. Post Office and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service to provide for his family.
Shelby was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Evelyn; brothers Donald, Merle, Harold Keith, Dale, and Roger; sisters Lenora Bennett, Leanna Burkland, and Florence Crowder; his son David and grandson, Paul Barnes.
He is survived by his sisters Orleatha Walker and Lois Kroger. Also surviving him are his children, Beverly (Bill) Barnes, Shelberdeen Calvin Hunt, Jr., Sandra (Ramon) Pacheco, Cindy Brodbeck, and Brent (Brenda) Hunt. He is also survived by six grandchildren Ramon (Nora) Pacheco, William (Jean) Barnes, Tanya (Albert) Varela, Amanda (Aron) Klockgether, Shelberdeen Calvin Hunt, III, and Kaitlyn Brodbeck and eight great-grandchildren, Destiny, Brandon, Viviana, Lisa, Jesse, Aron, Illyana, and Farrah.
