Selma V. A. Bowers, 90, of Elkhart, passed away Tuesday morning (Feb. 15, 2011) at home surrounded by her family.

She was born Oct. 24, 1920, in Elkhart, to the late Sylvanus S. V. and Olga (Eskilson) Kidder. On Dec. 6, 1941, she married Noble L. Bowers Sr. in Portage. He died on April 13, 1997.

She is survived by her son, Noble L. “Bud” Bowers Jr. of Elkhart; and daughters Ardith Shephard of Marcellus, Mich., Janet (Richard) Thompson and JoAnn Williams, both of Elkhart. Nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; brothers Arthur (Norene) Kidder of LaPorte, Richard (Irene) Kidder, Donald Kidder and Allen Kidder, all of Elkhart; and two sisters, Nancy McCracken of Argos and Olga Fuller of South Bend survive as well. She was preceded in death by a brother, Edgar Kidder.

Selma was a waitress for more than 30 years, 19 of those at the Elks Country Club. She was a member of California Road Missionary Church and attended Meadowbrook Wesleyan Church. Selma enjoyed raising exotic birds and fish in her fish ponds and making crafts, especially handmade puppets that she sold throughout the country at crafts shows. She attended Jimtown Schools and was also a member of the Elkhart County Conservation Club.
