Selma Ruth Washington Hutchinson

Selma Ruth Washington Hutchinson was born September 29, 1928 in Marshall, Texas. She was one of twelve children born to Albert and Donia Washington. Her siblings were Elvia, Juanita, Tessie, Gustavia, Booker, Arnold, Albert, Joy, Charles (Charlie), Rubye and Hadiya.

She moved to Utah to teach school and there she met and married Sergeant B. Hutchinson. They made a home in Ogden, Utah and were blessed with five children Dorothy Ruth, Darrell Joseph (deceased), Cheryl Joann, Deron Barry and Cassandra Lynn (Sandy).

Selma accepted Christ at an early age and served faithfully at her beloved church New Zion Baptist for over 50 years. Over the years she served as the Sunday School Superintendent, a deaconess and a member of the church Mission.

She graduated from Pemberton High school and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Bishop College in Marshall. She achieved her teaching certificate and was a beloved school teacher for over 30 years. She was also an active member, and for a time, president of the Women’s Historical Society. She loved her family and was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Throughout her life she maintained a strong faith in God. She departed this life on August 31, 2016.

Selma leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter Dorothy Callis, son-in-law Frederick, daughter Cheryl, son Deron and daughter Cassandra; her grandchildren (her cherished grandson Chrystopher preceded her in death), Derrick, Kandyce, Neisha and her great grandchildren Felicia, Renae and Austin; Vanessa and a host of other relatives and friends.
