Samuel D. Oliverio, 79, of Wilsonburg, WV, entered into eternal peace on Monday, December 30, 2013 following an extended illness. He was surrounded by his family and friends during his final moments. “Sam” as he was known was born August 19, 1934 in Scranton, PA, son of the late Batistta and Catherine Leionzanti Oliverio, both of whom came to the United States as youths from Italy. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Smith Oliverio on January 3, 2006; and a half brother, Anthony Oliverio. Sam grew up and lived in the Adamston and Wilsonburg area’s and graduated from Victory High School in 1952.
Mr. Oliverio was an avid sports enthusiast. He and his family enjoyed attending WVU football games together and he loved playing a good game of golf, of which he made two hole-in-ones. Sam also enjoyed hunting and had bowled on several leagues in Clarksburg and in Largo, Florida, where he had a home close to family and friends and liked spending the winters there for several years. One of his fondest memories was traveling to Italy with family and visiting the area where his parents were from and meeting relatives still living there. Sam retired from Consolidated Freightways as a truck driver and upon retiring, Mr. Oliverio did some volunteer work at UHC, and up until recently delivered cars part-time for Joe Pyle Auto Auction until his illness. He is survived by three children, Dave Oliverio and his wife Joanie of Lost Creek, Phyllis Grimes and her companion Mark Jenkins of Clarksburg, and Dale Oliverio and his wife Heidi of Lumberport; one brother, Carmen Oliverio and wife Patsy of Wilsonburg; one sister, Joanna Haught and husband Joe of Largo, FL; five grandchildren, Joshua Scott Oliverio, Brandy Grimes Hannah, Miranda N Oliverio, Nathan S Oliverio and Hannah L Oliverio; four great grandchildren, Caleb, Elizabeth, Blake and Catherine; and a special companion, Louvella Medina of Spelter.
