WINSTED –Samuel Benjamin (Benny) LiskinSamuel B. Liskin, 78, of Torringford Street, died Monday, December 4, 2006, at his home surrounded by his family, after a long battle with cancer. He was the husband of the late Erika (Klaus) Liskin, who predeceased him in 2002. He was born November 12, 1928, the son of the late Myer and Jenny Liskin of Winsted. Besides being a loving and devoted husband and family man he was a local businessman, community supporter, and patriot. Mr. Liskin was a lifelong resident of Winsted. He served his country by joining the U.S. Army and attained the rank of Sergeant. He was stationed in Germany during the World War II occupation, where he met his wife, Erika. After returning to Winsted with his wife and daughter, he was recalled to active service and once again served his country while stationed in Korea, during the Korean . Liskin continued to serve his community being a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Police Force, the Winsted Fire Police, serving as a committeeman for Boy Scout Troop 27, and by working the polls on election days. He was a life long member of Temple Beth Israel and was instrumental in establishing the Winsted Area Daycare Center in the lower level there. He was a Life Member of Winsted Elks Lodge #844, where he was honored as Elk of the Year in 1986; a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 296; and a Life Member of American Legion Tuttle Burns Post #43. On November 11, 2006 his military service was rewarded when he received the Connecticut Wartime Veteran’s Service . Liskin a well known local businessman owned and operated Liskin’s Service Station on two different occasions that totaled over 20 years. He also was employed by Phil Joseph Chevrolet, the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles, Al Garbus Automotive Parts Company, and the Pit Stop Car Wash and Gas Station. He continued using his business expertise by helping his son open and run Nutmeg Pantry Superette and Liskin’s Country Cupboard. It was at these last two locations where he expanded his love of cooking.
