Obituary for Sam L. A. Bowlin Sam A. Bowlin 97, died at 5:45 AM Sunday August 31, 2008 at Heritage of Huntington, where he was a resident. Mr. Bowlin was born August 16, 1911 in Huntington, IN to Ernest A. and Etta A. Hasty Bowlin. His parents preceded him in death. He married Harrett Yeoman May 31, 1947 in Huntington, IN. She preceded him in death December 17, 2006. Mr. Bowlin was a Huntington Township farmer for 28 years, retired September 1964.

He served in the US Marines from 1935 until 1940 retiring with the rank of Captain, Mr. Bowlin entered the U.S. Army during World War II as an enlisted man from April 12th, 1941 to June 1st, 1942, achieving the rank of Corporal. He was commissioned on June 2, 1942 and served on active duty until March 7, 1946, primarily with the 1st Infantry, 6th Division, participating in the New Guinea and Luzon Campaigns and achieving the rank of Major.

During his service, he earned the Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Campaign Star, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the American Campaign Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, the Distinguished Marksmanship Medal (the highest award awarded in the Army), The World War II Victory Medal, and the Silver and Bronze Star Medals.

Mr. Bowlin also was a demonstrator and shooter for Winchester and Western Arms Companies. Sam was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Huntington, IN. A member of Masonic Lodge # 483 F. & A. M., Masonic York bodies of Huntington, Eastern Star Floral Chapter #75, V. F. W. Post # 2689, American Legion Post # 7. Survivors include: 1 son: George E. Bowlin His wife Susan J. (Golembiewski) Roanoke, IN; 1 granddaughter Julia H. Bowlin, Roanoke, IN.
