Sam G Cardenas passed peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Thursday, August
11, 2016, just twenty days after the passing of his beloved wife, Josephine his sweetheart of 68
years. He was born on December 15, 1925 in Fredericksburg, Texas. He was the last surviving
child of Jose Angel, and Antanacia Gonzales Cardenas. He moved to Utah as a young boy and
spent the rest of his life in Box Elder County. He met the love of his life; Josephine Baltazar in
grammar school, and following his return from WWII they were married on Christmas Day in
1948 at St. Henry’s Catholic Church. Dad proudly served his country during WWII, where he
was stationed in Germany and Japan, and received the Purple Heart.
They made their home in Brigham City where they have lived on Sixth East since 1957, and
raised their two sons Sam Jr. and Rick. They were very proud of their Catholic Heritage. Sam
was instrumental with what is the current St. Henry’s Catholic Church on Second East. The
building was formerly located on The Defense Depot Ogden property, Sam worked with other
parish members on the purchase and relocation of the building.
Dad worked for The Defense Depot Ogden for 39 years, and enjoyed his retirement. He worked
part time for Safeway in his younger years, and later for Brigham City Corp during his retirement
years.
Dad was a simple man that enjoyed Canadian Whiskey, a cold Bud Light, a juicy steak, and
playing his guitar. Salt was his favorite seasoning. He enjoyed, golfing, fishing, and hunting
with his family & friends. His favorite foursome on the golf course was Julian, Simon, and Eddy
Garza. He worked very hard at keeping a well manicured yard, and loved to have his family
over for cookouts on the patio.
Dad was dedicated to his family, and would do anything in the world for us. Above all he loved
our Mom, and tended to her needs all the days of her life. It became very difficult for him when
he could no longer assist with her declining health.
He leaves behind his son; Sam Jr., daughter-in-law; Hortencia Cardenas, son; Rick Cardenas.
His adored grandchildren; Marlina (Bud) Gilbert, Sammie Ed, and Monica (Mario) Echeverria.
His darling eight great grandchildren; Isabella, Olivia, Alyssa, Sophia, Tessa, Dakarai, Isaiah,
and Mateo.
Like Mom, Dad had many adoring nieces and nephews that loved their Uncle Sam. We will all
miss him terribly.
He was preceded in death by his beloved Josephine, his brothers; Juan, Jake, Ben, and John
Cardenas. His sisters; Patchen Silva, and Senorina Garza.
