“Sam”, as he was affectionately known, was born June 10, 1932 in Santa Rita, NM to Felipe and Adela Cabrera Huerta.  He had served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.  Upon his return he worked and retired from Kennecott Copper Mines. Sam enjoyed the outdoors, taking great care of his yard and garden, and caring for his flowers.  One of the many things Sam was known for was caring for all the birds in the neighborhood, making sure they had plenty to eat.

Sam enjoyed all sports, never missing his local high school sports teams games.  Anyone who knew Sam knew of his sense of humor and how he loved to joke with anyone, like how he always said his wife Ruth was a baby when he first saw her. Sam was married to the love of his life Ruth for 65 years and together they raised five children. He loved his family and spending time together was very important to him. He will definitely be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Sam is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Ruth Huerta; four daughters, Diane Finney (Terrell), Joyce Huerta, Ruth Darlene Seawolf (Roy), Sharon Huerta (Carol); son, Jason Huerta (Chad); grandchildren Shane Gonzales, Joshua Finney, Ryan Gonzales (Rosalva), Kellyn Finney, Renatta Griego (Luke), Jasmine Miller (Alex), and Samantha Terry;  great grandchildren, Alexi Gonzales, Asyia Footracer, Hailey Jo Footracer, Dominic Gonzalez, Noah Gonzales, Gabriel Miller, Kaylee Miller, Regan Griego, Audra Gonzales, Micah Griego, Rylan Miller, Uriah Griego, Layla Miller, Josiah Hix and Christopher Hix; one brother, Bob Huerta (Phyllis); and many nieces and nephews.  Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Felipe and Adela Huerta; siblings, Bill Huerta, Alice Fedak, Jean Wing, Mary Martinez, Rebecca Dutro and Danny Huerta.
