Dr. Salvador Mendez

12-7-20 to 4-8-12

Survived by his beloved wife of 65 years Hilda, three devoted children, Vilma Dailey, Hector Mendez and Hilda Jacobson, 7 grandchildren and one great grandchild, 2 brothers and one sister.

Papi, as he was called by his loved ones, was born in Havana, Cuba. He graduated from the Univ of Havana Medical School in 1946.

In 1961 during the Castro revolution and after being held captive as a political prisoner on three separate occasions, he fled Cuba with his family to the US. In the US he and his family lived briefly in Miami until he was recruited to and hired as a physician in Milledgeville, GA.

While in Milledgeville, he successfully practiced medicine as a Psychiatrist for 25 years at the Central State Hospital for the mentally ill.

In 1984 he moved to Key Biscayne Florida to retire but instead was offered an opportunity to practice as a Psychiatrist at Douglas Gardens Community Medical Center in Miami Beach where he remained employed until his retirement in 2009.

He was loved by all whose lives he touched, and was considered a clever prankster who brought much laughter and fun to his family and friends; he was a charismatic, cheerful individual and a devoted family man. We will miss him enormously, his light, his joy, his sense of humor, and amazing strong love.
