Sally J. Gauss, age 78, of Wisconsin Rapids, passed away February 6, 2022 at Wellington Place at Biron with family by her side.

Sally was born May 27, 1943 in Michigan to George and Virginia Hanson. Her family moved quite a bit throughout her childhood, eventually moving to the Grosse Pointe area. She met the love of her life, James Gauss, through mutual friends when she was a junior in high school. After graduating from Grosse Pointe High School, Sally worked as an executive secretary at Detroit Edison. It was there that she met one of her dearest life-long friends, Shirley. Surrounded by Jim’s family and a small group of close friends, Sally and Jim were married in the church his family attended on September 14, 1962. They moved to the UP and lived in married housing while Jim worked towards his degree at Michigan Tech. After his graduation, they moved to Wisconsin Rapids. Many of the friends Sally met through Newcomers became more like family over the years. With no family locally, the Gauss and Stapelman families often spent holidays, birthdays, and special occasions together. Sally and Jim were married for 56 years; he preceded her in death on August 7, 2019.

Sally was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing, knitting, reading, watching mysteries, and played in several bridge clubs. She was a very social person and enjoyed spending time with friends.

She loved her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.

Sally is survived by her children: Deborah (Brian) Bobrowski, Kimberly (Jason) Shields, and Craig (Rachelle) Gauss; her grandchildren: Christopher Shields, Megan Shields, Logan Gauss and Thea Gauss; her sisters: Susie Papciak, Betsy (Craig) Dykstra, and Debbie Hanson; her sisters-in-law: Patt Gauss, Linda Gauss and Susan (Peter) Biolchini; her nephew and Godson: Steven Gauss; several nieces and nephews; and friends. In addition to her parents, Sally is preceded in death by her husband James and son Jeffrey. She is further preceded in death by her brothers-in-law Bob Gauss and David Gauss, nephew Eric Gauss, niece Sara Monterubio Hagan, and several dear friends.

The family would like to thank her many caregivers throughout the years, including Barb, Robin and Rosie, the staffs at Pride TLC, Hilltop Grand Village, Wellington Place at Biron, and St. Croix Hospice. A very special thank you to Pastor Cheryl Davis for her love, compassion, and care of our mother.
