He enjoyed playing softball and basketball, watching college basketball, and loved supporting his nieces and nephews and attended their games.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clayton Bates; grandparents, Dan and Thelma Bates and Lynn J. Whitmill and Vaudis Shippen; and niece, Adora Davis.
