Russell R. Newcomer age 94 of Ashland, died Sunday July 3, 2011 at Crystal Care Center. He was born March 29, 1917 in Ashland, the son of Jessie and Carrie (Smith) Newcomer. Mr. Newcomer had lived all of his life in Ashland. Russell married Helen (Woltz) Newcomer on July 3, 1938. He had worked 27 years for the Ashland City Schools where he drove a school bus, and had later retired from Mansfield Tire and Rubber Co. after working there for over 28 years, he previously had a bakery truck route, drove taxi cab and worked for Emmons Dairy in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Mr. Newcomer was a member of the Steele Ave. Church of Christ and had most recently attended Ashland Christian Church. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 88, a member of the Mansfield Tire 25 year Club, and a member of the School Employee Retirement system. Mr. Newcomer was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served in WWII.
Survivors include his son and daughter in- law Ron and Barbara Newcomer of Ashland; three grandchildren, Rick Newcomer of Marion, OH., Teresa (Randy) Mansell of Arlington, TX., Rod (Tara) Newcomer of Grapevine, TX.; two step- grandchildren, Dianne Patton of KY., Jon (Dawn) Fitzgerald of FL.; seven great grandchildren, Dr. Crystal (JC) Decker of Columbus, OH., Ryan Newcomer of Columbus, OH., Tyler Mansell of Arlington, TX., Trevor Mansell of Arlington, TX., Alexander Newcomer of Grapevine, TX., Andrew Newcomer of Grapevine, TX., Aiden Newcomer of Grapevine, TX.; four step great grandchildren, Ryan (Shizuka) Clark of Pensacola, Fl., Renee (Matt) Rhodes of KY., Spc. Robynn Dietrich of U.S. Army- Iraq, Russell Dietrich of KY.; five step great- great grandchildren, Dana Clark, Elliott Clark, Zane Rhodes, Canon Rhodes, Jackson Dietrich; brothers, Harold (Nellie) Newcomer of Perrysville, Stanley (Donna) Newcomer of FL., Norman (Kay) Newcomer of Ashland, Robert Newcomer of GA., Richard (Pat) Newcomer of Mansfield; sisters Marjorie (Jim) Gorman of Mansfield, Frances Harned of TN.; sister in- law, Grace Newcomer of Mansfield; along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Helen in 1996, son Joe Newcomer in 2001, infant sister Marilyn Ann, and his brother Everett Newcomer.
