Russell LeRoy Carey of Urbandale Iowa died on March 6th, 2021 in the presence of his family. He was born in Spencer, South Dakota on March 7th, 1934 to Irvin and Grace Carey.

Russ grew up in the Reliance and Chamberlain, South Dakota area. He graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1952. After graduation, he served in the Army and was a veteran of the Korean war. On June 17th, 1956 Russ married Delores Swift at Lucas, SD.

Russ had a passion for teaching and achieved his bachelor’s (University of Spearfish, SD), master’s (University of North Dakota), and doctorate (University of Wisconsin) degrees in the areas of math, science, and teaching. Russ taught at the high school and university levels. He spent most of his career working for the Iowa Department of Education. He left a legacy in pursuing a lifetime of learning and academics that he passed on to his children and grandchildren.

Russ is survived by his wife, Delores Carey, of Urbandale, IA. Children, Cindy Carey, of Urbandale, IA, and son, Jay Carey, and wife Iva, of Champlin, MN. Four grandchildren: Katelyn Glover and husband Stephen of Plymouth, MN; Nathan Carey and wife Fay, great-grandson Eugene of Athens, Greece; Mike Carey and wife Meghan, great-grandchildren Aila and Oliver of Madison, WI; Molly Howse and husband Tucker, great-grandchildren Wilder and Reagan of Elk River, MN.

He was preceded in death by his father, Irvin, and mother, Grace; his brothers Irvin JR and Jack; his sisters Janice Schelske, Nadine Schrieber, and Beverly Feltman; and daughter, Sheri.
