Russell J. Mann, 78, of Elkhart, died at 12:22 p.m. Sunday (May 2, 2009) in his home.

He was born Dec. 8, 1930, in Elkhart to Russell and Mildred (Parcell) Mann. On Oct. 20, 1951, he married Barbara M. Hayes in Bronx, N.Y.

She survives along with two sons, Russell M. (Janet) Mann of Elkhart and Troy E. (Amy) Mann of Goshen; one daughter, Susan Walker of Elkhart; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Jerry (Pat) Mann of Union, Mich.; and five sisters, Betty (Al) Schmalenberger, Joyce (Don) Metzler and Cheryl Deak, all of Elkhart, Colleen (John) Merrill of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Jane (Jim) Bontrager of Geneva.

Two siblings, Rex Mann and Marilyn West, preceded him in death.

Mr. Mann served in the U.S. Navy for 21 years, attaining the rank of Chief Boatswain Mate upon his honorable discharge. He then worked as a conductor for Penn Central Railroad (Conrail) for 23 years, retiring at the age of 61.

After retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandkids, and went to many Little League and football games. He was a 58-year member of Calvary United Methodist Church and volunteered as a red coat at Elkhart General Hospital.

Mr. Mann was an avid Cubs fan.
