Ruey B. Wheeler, 103, of Schoharie, NY, and New Smyrna Beach, passed on May 25, 2022. 

Ruey was born April 20, 1919, in Schoharie.  She was the daughter of Warren and Clara (Lawyer) Badgley.  Ruey was a 1936 graduate of Schoharie High School and a 1939 graduate of Oneonta Normal School.  On July 26, 1943, she married Donald J. Wheeler of Middleburgh, NY, at the United States Naval Base in Norfolk, Virginia.

 

Ruey assisted at a nursery school in Schoharie; taught fifth and sixth grades at the Union School in Tivoli, NY;  fourth and sixth grades at Bethlehem Central School in Delmar, NY;  Elementary School at the US Naval Base in Norfolk, Virginia; and kindergarten and third grade at Schoharie Central School where she retired in 1971.

 

In her later years, she spent half of her time in New Smyrna Beach and the other half in Schoharie.

Eventually she moved to New Smyrna Beach permanently, and spent the last six years of her life at Tiffany’s On The River, (ALF). Ruey lived an extraordinary life and shared so many incredible friendships. She used to say “The key to a long life was a Bloody Mary a day & chocolate”. She will be missed dearly.       

                                                          

Survivors include her daughters, Ronda (Charles) Young of Brewster, MA; Donna (Arthur) Ruland of Leland, NC; and Connie DeGroff of New Smyrna Beach, FL.  Her grandchildren are Abby Adams, Zachary Young; Michael Ruland, Marcy Ruland, Marc (Lindsay) Ruland; Tonia (Brian) Pemrick, Jeremy (Diana) DeGroff, Adam DeGroff, and Lindsay (Ronald) Underhill.  Her great grandchildren are Alyssa, Taylor, Emry, Connor, and Carter.  Her former Son-In-Law, David DeGroff, her cousins, Ed Badgley and Ruey Badgley Pethick and her niece, Mary Jane Wheeler, also survive her.

She was predeceased by her parents, Warren and Clara,  and her husband, Donald.
