Roger Keith Smit, the son of Arnold and Betty Dykstra Smit, was born June 9, 1953 in Sioux Center, Iowa. He was a graduate of Boyden-Hull High School in 1971 and of Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. Roger had also done graduate work at the University Of Iowa and Iowa State University. 

On September 23, 1977, Roger was united in marriage to Sandra K. Nettinga in Hull, Iowa. They started their life together in Newton, Iowa. Roger was a dedicated husband and dad, who loved music, gardening, his children’s activities, including the fishing trips with Ben, his brothers and nephews, Emily’s swim meets, running and the solitude of the country.

Roger was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents. Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Sandra ; his son, Ben Smit of Newton; his daughter, Emily Smit of Newton; his parents, Arnold and Betty Smit of Orange City; Ron and Adri Smit of Hospers, Iowa; and Garl and Joy Smit of Holstein, Iowa; his two sisters and brothers-in-laws, Audrey and Perry Raman of hull; and Joan and Randy Wiliams of Omaha, Nebraska; and his many nieces and nephews.
