Robert James “R.J.” Frye, 80, of Union Hall, VA, passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2012 at the Virginia Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Roanoke with his family by his side. Above all, R. J. loved his family. He was born July 22, 1932 in Stokes County, NC to the late Elijah and Pearlie Frye. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Octrola Chitwood and Onabelle Wiggington and a brother, Moir Frye. R. J. served his country during the Korean War in the U. S. Navy. He served his community as a member of the Board of Supervisors of Henry County. He retired to Smith Mountain Lake after being employed at E. I. DuPont, Inc. in Martinsville for thirty years. He served his fellow employees by representing them in their Union. Foremost, he served God within the Fieldale Baptist Church and the Penhook United Methodist Church. R. J. loved football, especially Fieldale-Collinsville High School football, where you could hear him on many Friday nights back in “the day” announcing games. Also, he was a true blue Virginia Tech football fan. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Betty Jo Dove Frye of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Sherrie Frye Tyler and Daniel Tyler of Roanoke and Pamela Frye Stalgren and Stefan Stalgren of Cary, NC; grandchildren, Trey Tyler of Richmond, Tatum Tyler of Charlottesville and Cohen and Oliver Stalgren of Cary, NC; sisters, Juanita Frye Davenport of Hampton and Gertrude Frye Webb of Danville; sister-in-law and husband, Donna Dove Parker and Nicholas Parker of Mebane, NC; brother-in-law and wife, Johnnie and Linda Dove of Martinsville and many wonderful nieces and nephews. R. J.’s grandchildren were the light of his life and he loved every minute that he could share with them. He will be missed by so many, but none as much as Betty, Sherrie and Pam who would like to thank the medical staff at the VA Hospital for their compassion and loving care.
