Robert P. Chapman, age 89 of Freeport, IL, passed away December 8, 2017 at Presence St. Joseph Center in Freeport.
He was born on January 29, 1928 in Freeport; the son of the late Clarence W. and Isabel G. Chapman. He grew up in Freeport and attended Freeport High School, University of Illinois and Northwestern University. Robert married Sandra Blunt on June 3, 1961 in Dakota, IL
In 1950 he organized Chapman Agency, an Independent Insurance Agency and in later years merged into Freeport Insurance Center. He retired after 51 years. In 1951, he was Freeport City Golf Champion. He became involved in many civic activities. He was President of the Jaycees, he received the Distinguished Service Award, was Director and Trustee of King’s Daughters Children’s Home for 25 years, served on the Boy Scouts Board, was the Lincoln-Douglas Centennial Director, served on the Housing Authority Board and served on many civic committees and several Trust Funds.
He became skilled in 3 cushion billiards and became acquainted with Willie Mosconi, pocket billiard world champion, and Charlie Peterson, world champion trick shot artist. In 1949 he was score keeper for the week of world championships in pocket and 3 cushion billiards and then scorekeeper for the 3 day, 3 cushion billiard world championship between Ezekiel Navarra and Willie Hoppe.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra of Freeport; three children, Dan (Brian) Chapman of Palatine, IL, Amy (Ben) Spindler of New London, WI, and Jeff (Lisa) Chapman of LaCrosse, WI; and grandchildren, Samuel, Finley and Isla Chapman of LaCrosse, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jack Chapman; and sister, Marilyn Laux.
