Robert “Maurice” Hammock, 91, a life-long resident of Newnan and Coweta County, died in Macon, Georgia on August 18, 2011. He had lived in Macon with his daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Joe Wall, for most of the last five years following the death of his wife Vivian Byrd Hammock in August 2006. Mr. Hammock was also preceded in death by his son Robert Maurice Hammock, Jr. and two brothers, Walter E. Hammock and Phillip A. Hammock. Mr. Hammock was the second son born to Alvin E. and Clessie P. Hammock on November 18, 1919. He attended Coweta County Schools and served as an enlisted man in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He saw action in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy from 1941-1945. A child of The Great Depression, Mr. Hammock quickly learned the necessity and rewards of hard work and the value of honesty and integrity. After World War II, he returned to Newnan where he partnered with his brothers, Eugene and Phillip, to establish Hammock Brothers Lumber Company. On October 26, 1946, Mr. Hammock married Vivian Byrd. A proud and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Mr. Hammock dedicated himself to the well-being of his family. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newnan for over 50 years and a former member of Coke’s Chapel United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Elk’s Club and the VFW. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia H. Wall and husband Joseph Wall; sister,Frances H. Pollard of Senoia. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Joseph Allen Wall Jr. (Sally Anne), Robert Hammock Wall (Elizabeth), Katie Hammock Norris (Mike), Claire Byrd Hammock, Joseph Hunt Fulwiler (Marci) and eight great-grandchildren, Sarah Glenn Leventis, James Pete Leventis, Katie Hollis Leventis, Vivian Dianne Norris, Katherine Hammock Wall, Robert Haywood Wall, Anne Yates Wall and Joseph Rustin Wall. A daughter-in-law, Glenn H. Fulwiler (Hunt), sisters- in-law, Lillian F. Hammock & Bobbie H. Breed, brothers-in-law, Thomas L. Byrd & Willis J. Byrd and numerous nieces and nephews . The family expresses their appreciation to those who provided special care to Mr. Hammock in his declining years. They include Tyrone Johnson, Janie Green and the staffs of John-Wesley Villas and Southern Care Hospice.
