Robert M. “Bob” Kunkel, 95, of South Bend, formerly of Elkhart, passed away Monday, Feb. 15, at the Center for Hospice in South Bend.
He was born June 13, 1920, in Elkhart, to Martin L. and Ida M. (Klawitter) Kunkel.
After graduating from Elkhart High School in 1938, Bob married his loving wife Norma. He worked 47 years at LaBour Pump Co. in Elkhart and White Pigeon, Mich., where he was one of the longest-serving employees in the company. Bob always had a garden, but when he retired, the garden got even larger. He raised and sold all kinds of vegetables and berries. Bob picked and sold hundreds of pints of raspberries. Bob also cut and sold many pick up loads of wood. This was all done with his family’s backing. All this with the Almighty God who gave him good health and a will and ability to do what he could do. When Bob was able, he loved going to the church, Trinity Lutheran Church, where he has belonged all his life. He loved to have the pastor or others sing old hymns with him. He read his Bible twice a day and read many magazines and books. He was a fan of White Sox baseball and many other sports.
Bob was always thankful to God for his faithful and caring daughter, Sharon, and granddaughter and grandson for so many God-given years.
The family would like to thank the Center for Hospice Care in South Bend and Dr. Scott Thomas for the loving kindness and care they gave to Bob.
Survivors include one daughter, Sharon (Larry) Richmond of South Bend; one grandson, Scott (Tiffany) Bradley of Bristol; one granddaughter, Cindy (Joe) Thomas of South Bend; nine great-grandchildren, Morgan, Joseph Jr., Hannah and Luke Robert Thomas, Amy and Megan Bradley, Eric Clark, and Brooke and Morgan Bayless; and two great-great-grandchildren, Aiden and Easton.
In addition to his wife, Norma L. (Johnson) Kunkel, who passed away March 16, 2003, he was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Ellen Bushong.
