Robert L. Peterson passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, March 3 from natural causes. He was recuperating from complications resulting from a broken hip, suffered in a fall at his home on Christmas Day. Born on June 1, 1928 in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, he had been a resident of Manassas since 1970. He worked for IBM in Manassas, retiring in 1989 after 25 years of service to the company. He was a member of All Saints Roman Catholic Parish in Manassas. In addition, he was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, George Brent Council, Manassas, VA; a member of the American Legion Post 10 in Manassas; and a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 7589, in Manassas. He served in the U.S Army at the end of WWII (1946-48) and was stationed in Japan as part of the American Occupation Forces. Following an honorable discharge, he returned to Ohio and enrolled at the University of Dayton where he was awarded an B.S. in Business Administration in 1953. Following his graduation, he worked for a number of industrial and electronic firms including Lau Blower (Dayton, OH); Sanders Associates (Nashua, NH); RCA (Cambridge, OH); and IBM (Owego, NY; Cape Kennedy, FL; and Manassas, VA). Among his most memorable work experiences was the time spent with IBM in Florida at the Kennedy Space Center as a member of the IBM team that worked with NASA on the Gemini and Apollo Projects, both of which were responsible for putting men on the Moon in 1969. In 1950, he married Marilyn Joanne Ellis of Vandalia, Ohio. She passed away in January 2013 after more than 62 years of marriage. Together they raised six sons and were blessed with seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His favorite pastime was fishing, which he especially enjoyed with his father-in-law, Cliff Ellis. In addition, he was an avid fan of the Washington Nationals baseball team, as well as high school and college athletic teams in which his sons and grandsons participated over the years. He is survived by sons Michael (Princeton, NJ), James (Manassas, VA), Jeffrey (Haymarket, VA), William (Bowie, MD) and Joseph (Acworth, GA); grandchildren Joey, Rebecca, Leslie, Steven, Sarah, Joy Lynn and Hannah; and great-grandchildren Camden, Haley and Riley.
