Robert Lloyd Weliver, 72, Crawfordsville IN died 5 PM Friday, July 5 unexpectedly after open heart surgery in St Francis Hospital Indianapolis. Born May 2, 1947 at Crawfordsville to Robert D and Arthella Caster Weliver. He loved life and lived it to its fullest. His greatest love was his family.
He married Mary Cain on October 23, 1976 at St Bernards’s Catholic Church Crawfordsville IN. Surving are wife Mary Weliver, sons Brian Ramey and Robert T. Weliver (Jennifer), daughter Sara Elliott, grandsons Dane and Drake Elliott (their hero), brother Frank “Skeet” Weliver (Mary), sisters Dee Schultz (Jim) and Kathy Warren, brothers-in-laws and sisters in-laws he considered his brothers and sisters, nieces, nephews and cousins. Proceeded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Greg Warren.
He had many hobbies including golfing, mowing his yard and his nephew’s vineyard. His favorite hobby was watching and coaching from the sidelines his two grandsons in whatever sporting event they were involved in. He loved to travel with his family. Trips to Florida, Chicago “Go Cubbies”, St Louis, Gulf Shores, Virginia Beach, National Harbor, Washington DC and Gettysburg.
He served 23 years in the military retiring as a Major. His love for the military was passed on to him by his father Major General Robert D Weliver. Age 13 he attended Culver Military Academy & was a member of the Black Horse Troop. He attended several military schools including the following: Army Airborne School Ft Benning GA, Jungle Operations Ft Gulick, C.Z., Armor School FT Knox KY, Infantry School FT Benning GA, Officer School FT Sill OK, Chemical Weapon School FT Campbell KY, Rotary Wing Aviation School FT Rucker AL and Field Artillery Officer Advanced training at FT Eustis VA.
As a Lieutenant, he was assigned to D Battery, 2nd 150th Field Artillery in Lebanon. After flight school, he was assigned to A Company 38th Aviation Battalion in Shelbyville. His greatest military assignment was flying his dad who was the Division Commander.
As a Captain, he held command of A Battery, 3rd Battalion, 139th Field Artillery, 38th Infantry Division at Darlington. Awards include Army Achievement Medals, First Class Gunner in the Indiana Red Leg Association, Military Order of Artillerymen, and Indiana Commendation Medal Exceptional Meritorious Service & 3rd Battalion (105 MM Towed) 139th Artillery Service Award for Outstanding Leadership.
He was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Crawfordsville for risking his own life for an elderly woman whose home was engulfed in flames.
He attended Crawfordville High School and Indiana State University. He was in the warehousing business and had been a Transport Deputy for the Montgomery County Sherriff’s Department. Memberships include St Bernard’s Catholic Church, Rocky Ridge Golf Club, Elks Lodge #483, Loyal Order of Moose, Fraternal Order of Eagles #1005, and The American Legion Post 302 50 year member.
