Robert Lynn Bomar, Jr., M.D. (Bob) passed away May 25, 2016. Bob, the son of Veturia Hicks and Robert Lynn Bomar, was born on January 12, 1931 in Springfield, Tennessee.
Bob is survived by his wife, Joan, and their blended family: Bill Bomar (Joy), Rob Bomar (Carol), Suzanne Sassee, Rob Howard (Pam), grandchildren: Adam Bomar (Rachael), Katie, Grace and Madelyn Bomar, Caroline and Ryan Sasse, Taylor and Avery Howard, and great-grandchild, Emme Bomar.
While very young, Bob’s family moved to Nashville. He entered Montgomery Bell Academy (MBA) as a high school sophomore. His senior year he was Captain of the football team and guided his 1948 team to an undefeated season and Middle Tennessee Championship. He was also selected as the Most Outstanding “Boy” at MBA! Bob enjoyed his time at MBA and formed many long lasting friendships while there.
Bob attended Vanderbilt University where he served as President of his Freshman Class. He joined the Navy and served four years as a Navy Medic. Returning to Vanderbilt, he completed his undergraduate degree, medical school and his surgical residency.
He maintained a surgical practice in Nashville, and was active in county and state medical societies. He was a diplomate of the American College of Surgeons, Assistant Chief of Surgery at Vanderbilt Medical School, and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the VA Medical Center-Vanderbilt. He served as Director of Surgical Education at Baptist Hospital, and was appointed to the Board of Directors at Park View Hospital. He later transferred to the Biloxi VA Medical Center where he retired in 1992.
Upon Retirement Bob moved to Fort Walton Beach, Florida, where he served on the Okaloosa Island Fire Board and as President of the Okaloosa Island Leaseholder Association. He continued to enjoy sailing his boat, “BOB’S CAT”, reading, telling funny stories and singing in the choir at St.
Bob was much loved by his family and many friends, and will be greatly missed!
