Muncie – Robert L. “Bob” Moore Sr., 71, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at his residence following an extended illness.

            Bob was born in Piqua, Ohio on October 3, 1939, the son of Marion Leonard and Evelyn Violet (Styles) Moore.

            Mr. Moore retired as a Chief Petty Officer from the United States Navy in 1976. In addition to tours of Vietnam and numerous meritorious ribbons, his 20-year career included a number of personal achievements. He became a member of the Domain of the Golden Dragon and a Dweller of the Far East when he crossed the 180th Meridian in 1957 aboard the USS Princeton.

            In 1958 he became a “Shellback” while aboard the Princeton when he crossed the 0 degree latitude and was initiated into the Solemn Mysteries of the Ancient Order of the Deep. He crossed the Arctic Circle in 1973 while serving on the USS Conyngham to become a “Blue Nose.”

            Bob also served on the USS Orion, USS Proteus, USS Duncan, and the USS Simon Lake. He was also stationed at Sub Base Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii, NATIC in Memphis, Tennessee, UnSta in Charleston, South Carolina, and FMAG in Norfolk, Virginia. After his retirement, Mr. Moore worked for Luick Quality Gage and Tool for over 25 years until his retirement.

            Bob was an accomplished bowler, and won numerous honors and league championships. Most recently he won the All-Event with Handicap title at the 2009 Muncie City Bowling Championship; the first time he ever participated in the event. He was a member of teams that won league championships in 2007 and 2009 for the Wednesday Night Eagles League.

            Mr. Moore also enjoyed participating in local car shows with his 1930 Model A, and he earned several trophies and awards. He enjoyed designing and building doll houses for his family, working with wood and metal, and was a member of Eagles Lodge 231, the Fleet Reserve Association, and the USS Princeton Association.

            He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Moore, Muncie; two sons, Bob Moore Jr., (wife-Gwen), Muncie, and James Moore, (wife-Vickie), Muncie; a daughter, Mary Kostakos, (husband-John), Beaverton, Oregon; nine grandchildren, Nickie Roberts, (husband-Brandon), Katie Moore, Marybeth Pierce, (companion-Dustin Williams), Shellie Kostakos, Bob Moore III, Tyler Pierce, Marie Kostakos, Jacob Moore, and Natalie Moore; one great grandchild, Brayden Pierce; a brother and sister, C. A. and Sandy Dalton, a brother John Purnell, (wife Janice); two sisters, Joyce Brenner and Cathy Hicks; two sisters-in-law, Ann Moore and Char Mahan; and several nieces and nephews.
