Robert E. Jenkins, Sr. age 91, of Edison, died Saturday, November 29, 2008, at JFK Medical Center in Edison. Robert was born to Richard and Ellen Fitzgerald Jenkins on October 15, 1917, in Laconia, New Hampshire.

He grew up in Highland Park, N.J. where he excelled in baseball, basketball, and football. He was the first graduate of St. Paul’s Grammar School in Highland Park. Robert played shortstop for the Inter-borough Semi-pro Baseball League for the MacKinney Oilers and had a “hell of an arm.” He served in World War II for the European Theater as a combat engineer in the 36th infantry division. Robert served from North Africa all the way through Austria, where he was involved in the liberation of Rome and ended his military service liberating Holocaust victims.

In 1947, he married Madge Hudson and moved to Edison, N.J. He retired after 47 years at the Middlesex County Engineering Office. A parishioner of Guardian Angels, he was active with Guardian Angels Holy Name Society and ushered the 10:30 a.m. mass. He was a longtime secretary of Middlesex County Holy Name Bowling League.

Robert was one of the founding members of the Brunswick Shamrock Club, a member of the Rahway Ancient Order of the Hiberians, New Brunswick Elks, and both the Edison and Guardian Angels Senior Citizens Club.
