Robert J. McDermott III of Hampton passed away at his home on January 7, 2002, surrounded by his family in the 69th year of his life. Born on August 6, 1932, Mr. McDermott resided in Hampton most of his life. He was politically active on both the local and state levels throughout his adulthood. From the time he became a registered voter he served on the Democratic Town Committee, presiding as chairman except when he held the office of selectman. He first became a selectman in Hampton at the age of 21, and was elected to the office again later in his life. He was currently serving his third consecutive term as selectman. He was a justice of the peace for over 30 years. He served on the Regional District #11 Board of Education for 13 years and as chairman for half of his term.
