Dr. Robert H. Vasoli, PhD, 80, of South Bend, IN,
passed away at 2:00pm Monday, May 1, 2006 in Regency
Place of South Bend. He was born on July 24, 1925 to the late John
Matthew and Isabelle Dorothy (Simon) Vasoli in
Philadelphia, PA, and has lived in South Bend since
August 1952, when he enrolled at the University of
Notre Dame for graduate study. Robert graduated in
June 1942 from Central High School in Philadelphia,
PA; Magna Cum Laude in 1952 from LaSalle College in
Philadelphia, PA; and received both his MA in 1953
and PhD in 1964, from the University of Notre Dame.
Dr. Vasoli retired in 1990 from the University of
Notre Dame, as an Associate Professor of Sociology
(specializing in Criminology). He was employed at the
University of Notre Dame from 1953-1962 and from
1963-1990. He had also taught courses at LeMoyne
College in Syracuse, NY for two years; Indiana
University North West for two summers; and was a
visiting professor for select courses at Valparaiso
University.
He is survived by two daughters, Maria Christina of
Portland, OR; Theresa Anne of Portland, OR; two sons,
Anthony Robert of Chicago, IL; Vincent Matthew (Maile)
of Rochester, MN; one grandson, Rocco Antonio Matsui
of Rochester, MN; one sister, Joyce M. (William)
Wallis of Doylestown, PA; two brothers, Edward J.
(Paulette) of Lower Gwynedd, PA; Raymond T. of
Norristown, PA; and many nieces & nephews.
Dr. Vasoli was a member of Fellowship of Catholic
Scholars and Golden Boys Golf Club of South Bend. He
was also a card-carrying retired electrician of IBEW
Local Union No. 98 and was a Navy Seabees Veteran of
World War II. Robert was the author of What God Has
Joined Together, which is a leading reference on
annulments in the American Catholic Church.
