Robert Francis St. John, 72, of Phoenix, Arizona passed away peacefully and unexpectedly at his residence on 17 April 2021 with his wife Melanie at his side.
Bob was born 22 July 1948 in Chicago Illinois to Helen and Robert G. St John. He was the youngest of their two children and graduated from Pomona High School Pomona, California in 1966. He earned his B.S. degree from Cal Poly Pomona. He began flying in the 1970’s and was employed as a flight instructor at Brackett Field, LaVerne, CA. He became the number 1 pilot for Wings West Airlines based in San Luis Obispo and in 1985 he went on to fly for America West Airlines, later US Airways, now American Airlines, retiring in 2013 after a long and distinguished flying career marked by many years as a 757 Captain flying the Hawaii routes.
His love for flying was matched only by his love for his family and his animals, and also his classic cars.
Bob married Melanie Searle in 1991 at St. Mary’s Basilica, Phoenix. Childless by choice, they were blessed with three nieces, the daughters of his sister Lesly and her husband Mike Egan:
Maureen (Jayson) Tobey, Mary (Jeff) Hawkinson, and Allison Egan. And three grand nephews Eli, Garrett and Blake Hawkinson.
Bob was a man of great integrity, who will be remembered for his professionalism, his dry sense of humour, his gentle kindness, and his love for all of God’s creatures, along with his abounding love of life.
