Robert F. Mercer, 88, of Plainville died of natural causes May 11, 2018 at Hospital of Central CT in New Britain. He was the loving husband of 61 years to Rose M. (Thibodeau) Mercer.

Robert was born in New Britain on March 29, 1930, son to the late Frank and Catherine (Callahan) Mercer. He grew up in New Britain, attended local public schools and graduated from New Britain High School. Robert was an active member of the National Guard and a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard. Following his honorable discharge from the military, Robert worked for several telephone companies from 1955 to the time of his retirement, including Telephone Pioneer of America, New Britain Phone Company and AT&T. He worked for these companies in various capacities, from a lineman working his way up to a tech supervisor. Robert resided in Plainville with his wife, Rose, for many years and was active in both state and local politics. He was most recently a member of the Plainville Aviation Committee. Robert had a profound love for flying, and formerly was a corporate pilot flying single airplanes for Morin Construction. In addition, he held his license in flying hot air balloons. He enjoyed participating in many sports including volleyball, tennis, and basketball. Robert will be deeply missed as his family and friends cherish the memories they have shared together.

In addition to his wife, Rose, Robert leaves behind his daughter, Christina Mercer; his fury companion, Tiger Lily; and several nieces and nephews.
