“Life is like a coin. You can spend it any way you wish, but you only spend it once.” This popular quote by Lillian Dickson can sum up any life, but what it lacks is to describe how poorly or richly one spent life’s coin. While many choose to amble through life, others, like Mr. Robert Scanlon, take life’s riches and spend them to the fullest. Mr. Robert Scanlon lived a full and wonderful life.
On June 28, 1928, Robert Scanlon took his first breath in Newton, Massachusetts to the joy and delight of his mother and father, Mrs. Esther Blair and Mr. James F. Scanlon. He was a loving brother to four siblings, and a charming son to his parents. He often helped his mother in her antique shop or aided his dad get ready in the morning before his dad went off to work in leather sales. Robert Scanlon eventually went to and became a graduate of Newton High School. However, his educational endeavors were not over yet. Robert Scanlon enrolled at Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana where he majored in Engineering. After a few years and much hard work, Robert graduated with an Engineering degree. During his academic life in high school and at Purdue University, Robert excelled in sports of all kinds including football, basketball, track, tennis, and golf. Sports would continue to play a large part in his life, all the way up to his retirement. After receiving his degree in Engineering, Mr. Robert Scanlon proudly joined the United States Army and served in the Korean War. A few years after the war had ended, a new chapter in Robert Scanlon’s life had begun. In 1965, Mr. Scanlon married his best friend and love of his life Emily Cornelia Eaves of Dallas, Texas. With his new bride, Robert Scanlon moved to New York where he ran a very successful business. Together, Robert and Emily had two beautiful children, Robert Blair and Emily Eaves. This charming family grew in love and happiness in their fun-filled community of Hycliff in Stamford, Connecticut. Many memories were made within these years of young, married love, parenthood, and childhood. Eventually Mr. Robert Scanlon moved his family once again to Dallas, Texas, the hometown of his wife. Within Dallas, Mr. Scanlon partnered and worked at Scanlon, Hughes & Associates, a manufacturing business which specialized in electronics and process equipment. After many years of work and success, Mr. Robert Scanlon retired to further enjoy life as well as his family.
Robert Scanlon enjoyed many things about life, including the wonderful, heart-warming sensation only Big Bands can cause within the soul. Robert was impassioned with music, and his tastes took a more classical approach. He loved Big Band Jazz and classics from the 1940’s and 1950’s, as well as a plethora of many other genres. However, Robert Scanlon’s music did not just end at his ears. He was skilled on his banjo or his piano. Many times, he would play a few tunes for family or friends just for fun and to put a smile of others’ faces. As in his high school and university days, Robert continued his love of sports, especially golf. His daughter loving recalls that “you couldn’t miss him on walks around the neighborhood with club in hand” and how “every Saturday morning, he would be out on the course playing a round [of golf] with his buddies.” Robert Scanlon loved the greens, the tees, and of course, striving to get that glorious hole-in-one.
The lives of Mr. Robert Scanlon’s family and friends became one of sorrow when on October 15, 2016 in the early morning, Mr. Robert Scanlon took his last breath in this world. His family will forever miss his constant, always present smile, his hardworking attitude, and his wonderful, caring heart. In death, he is joined by his loving wife and best friend, Emily Cornelia Eaves Scanlon; his parents, Esther Blair and James F. Scanlon; and his siblings, Blair Scanlon, Philip Scanlon, and Jane Scanlon Reid. Mr. Robert Scanlon is survived by his loving children, Robert Blair Scanlon and Emily Eaves Scanlon Crump; his son-in-law, Jeffrey W. Crump; and his grandchildren, Emily Blaire Crump and Justin Wayne Crump.
The lives of his loved ones and all who knew him has been impacted by Robert Scanlon, a truly wonderful, kind, and generous man who loved his wife, his children, and his grandchildren more than anything.
