Robert J. “Navy Bob” Ankiewicz, Sr., 72, of Peru, passed away Monday morning, April 30, 2018 at his daughter’s home in Morris, surrounded by his family. Mr. Ankiewicz was born February 26, 1946 in LaSalle to John and Nellie (Mini) Ankiewicz. He married Katherine “Kathy” Ribolzi on December 26, 1967 at Holy Family Church in Oglesby. He was a graduate of LaSalle-Peru High School.
He received his bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University and his master’s degree from the University of Illinois. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving for 33 years. Mr. Ankiewicz taught sixth grade at Sherman School in Streator for five years. He was the owner of Ankiewicz Deli and Dairy in Peru for 38 years. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Holy Name Society where he was a past-president, Peru CSO, American Legion Post 375 where he served as commander, Peru Veterans Memorial Group where he served as commander, Peru Ambulance Board where he served as president and the Ladd Moose Club. He also served as a Peru alderman for 14 years and was a school board member.
He enjoyed gardening, fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Kathy; three children, Robert (Karee) Ankiewicz, Jr. of Peru, Lisa (Steve) Huettemann of Morris and Carrie Ankiewicz of Peru; five grandchildren, Anja, Aric, Alex, Faith and Courtney; two sisters, Darlene (Robert) Volk of Peru and Mary (Larry) Hiester of Tonica; one brother, Ronald (Bonnie) Ankiewicz of Las Vegas, NV and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Pallbearers will be Dennis Znaniecki, Jack Landgraf, Tim Fonderoli and Mike Trench.
