Rita Abent, age 69 passed away Monday, January 11, 2021 after a long battle against pulmonary fibrosis. She was born July 29, 1951 to Harold and Wanda (Smrek) Abent in Jackson, Michigan. They preceded her in death. She married Mac Stringer in 1978 and he preceded her in death.Rita loved learning and new challenges. She spent more than 45 years in education, as a teacher and university administrator in Michigan, New York, Florida, Kansas and most recently Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania. Along the way, she also served as editor of the Hollywood Sun newspaper in Hollywood, Florida.From before she could walk, she loved the water. She was responsible for teaching hundreds of children to swim at Holman Pool and Whispering Pines camp, and taught water survival skills as a seasonal state park ranger. Some of her favorite days were spent with family at the “Trudeau Resort” and the “Lake House.”Rita was a voracious reader, Jeopardy enthusiast, collected wind-up toys and above all, loved her family. She is survived by sisters Patricia Abent, Charlotte, MI; and Janet Parks, Spring, TX, and brothers Harold Abent (Connie), Owosso, MI and Patrick Abent (Cindy), Roswell, GA., best friend Karen Gabrys as well as several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sisters Linda Abent Brown, Owosso, MI, Christine Hill (Herb), Kent, WA, and Wanda Abent, Owosso, MI.In lieu of flowers, family and friends are asked to make a gift to the Abent Family Scholarship at SRU so that the joy of learning can be shared with deserving students.
