Rick W. Flynn, 52, of Jacksonville, passed away Friday, January 13, 2012, at his home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born Sept. 26, 1959, in Jerseyville, the son of Robert W. and Phyllis Erdman Flynn. He married Teresa Lockwood Leefers on Feb. 20, 1999, in Jacksonville and she survives.
He is also survived by his mother, Phyllis Rimbey of Jacksonville; four children, Tyler Flynn of South Jacksonville, Dustin (Stephanie) Leefers of St. Louis, MO, Lindsay Leefers (fiancé, Andrew Holland) of Jacksonville and Cory Leefers (fiancé, Alice Hale) of Bolingbrook; one granddaughter, McKenna Holland, Grampa’s pride and joy; two brothers, Ed (Mary) Flynn of Madison, WI and Bill (Tammy) Flynn of Jacksonville; uncle and aunt Jim and Ellen Cope of Brighton, CO; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Flynn; and his step-father, Clarence Rimbey.
Mr. Flynn was a 1977 graduate of Jacksonville High School. He then joined the U.S. Air Force, serving as a Munitions Specialist, and was honorably discharged in 1984. Following that, he started his career as a Corrections Officer. He worked at the Jacksonville Correctional Center, and then helped open the Greene County IIP Boot Camp. He later returned to the Jacksonville Correctional Center, retiring in 2010. Rick was an avid collector, and loved spending time with his buddies at Stewart’s Auto Body, “The Shop”. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and golf. He was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and NASCAR, and loved to barbecue and spend time with his family and friends.
