Richard H. Wahler 83, of Freeport died Saturday March 13, 2004 at the University Hospital in Madison. Born October 16, 1920 in Freeport he was the son of Richard and Grace (Bennett) Wahler. On August 27, 1943 he married Doris Adams in Freeport.

He was a life-long active member of Grace Episcopal Church in Freeport. A veteran of U.S. Army he was involved in Coast Artillery, Engineering, Medical and Intelligence.

He worked for Commonwealth Edison for 40yrs. retiring as Marketing Engineer. As one of the founding members of Jr. Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) he was president 1950-51 and Outstanding Jaycee in 1952. Freeport’s Outstanding Young Man in 1953. Chairman of City Planning Commission 1952-62, member of Advisory Committee to Mayor on city finances 1950-51. Publicity Chairman for 1958 Lincoln-Douglas Celebration, Treasurer of Freeport Park District for 32 yrs, and volunteer for Sr. Center money management program. His memberships include Golden “K” Kiwanis, Amvets and the Eagles Club.

He was a supporter of the local High Schools and College sporting events. His greatest passion was golf having four hole-in-ones. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were a special part of his life.

He is survived by his wife Doris, daughters, Michelle (Larry) Miller of Rockford, Holly (Kent) Van Leeuwen of Henderson, NV, Maureen (Brad) Benson of Farmington, Utah, Barbara (Tim) Abel of Carlock; sister, May (Richard) Grilliot of Freeport, brother, Kenn (Phyllis) Wahler of Garland, TX; 8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren.Parents, one sister Jayn Lafferty, grandsons Van Miller and Adam Benson preceded him in death.
