Mr. Richard Lee Campbell, 55, of Palmetto, died Monday, October 20, at Coliseum Medical Center in Macon, Georgia.

Richard Lee Campbell was born Oct. 24, 1952, to Sarah Byrom Campbell. He was a 1970 graduate of Campbell High School. Mr. Campbell was the founder of Palmetto Plumbing, which he started in 1974.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sarah Byrom Campbell and Victor Morris Campbell, his brother, James Campbell, wife, Mary Woods Campbell, sister, Juanita Oglesby, and grandson Campbell Jude Cole.

Surviving is his children, Sarah Fay Campbell and Jonathan Richard Campbell of Newnan, and Mary Melinda Cole and her husband Joe of Palmetto; grandchildren Ryan Joe Cole and Jona Elias Campbell; sisters, Loretta Bennett of Dallas, and Regina Simpson and her husband Grady, of Sharpsburg, sister-in-law Josephine Campbell, brother-in-law Jerry Oglesby, and a host of nieces, nephews, and in-laws.

Mr. Campbell was an adoring father and grandfather, whose greatest joy was his grandchildren. He passed on to his children his deep and abiding love of the outdoors, especially the mountains near Clayton, Georgia, and Cherokee, N.C. He was an accomplished deer hunter who enjoyed whitewater rafting, swimming, and boating. Mr. Campbell loved music, especially the blues. Mr. Campbell also had a lifelong love and respect for American Indian culture. The hospital where he died is located in the historic Ocmulguee Fields, an area held sacred by the Creeks and their ancestors for over 1,000 years.
