Richard Dick Edward Jones, Sr. formerly of Myrtle Beach, passed away on January 18, 2024 in Suffolk, VA.He is survived by his wife, Karen E. Jones; children, Richard E. Jones, Jr. (Donna), Charles Jones (Susan), David Jones (Lisa), and Linda Lahowin (Michael); nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and extended family, Chris Warner (Dana) Michelle Brennan, and Kelly Werner. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Addie Jones; sister and brother in law, Phyllis and James Shaffer.Born in Mason County, WV on July 1, 1934, Richard grew up in Ashland, KY and Huntington, WV graduating from Huntington High School in 1952 and attending Marshall College. He married Barbara Nell Kime in 1953.Richard served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954-1963 first as a member of the USAF Honor Guard, then as a Crypto Technician. In 1963, he began working for the National Security Agency, which included a stint with the White House Security Council (NSA) under the Reagan Administration. He was the director of the National Cryptological Museum in Fort Meade, MD before his retirement from NSA in 1989.Dick moved to Myrtle Beach, SC in 1991 and married Karen E. Warner in 1992.Dick worked for the city of Conway, SC, beginning in 1991 as a business license inspector and then as a computer operations manager. He retired from Conway in 1996. Dick was active in Southcreek community as editor of the newsletter, member of the mens golf association, and president of Southcreek HOA.Richard enjoyed history and delving deep into his family tree. He wrote a history of the Conway Fire Department, which was published in 1998 by the Horry County Historical Society. He was also voted the volunteer of the year in 1994 by the Horry County Cultural Arts Council.Dick was dedicated to his family, enjoyed the arts, and was an avid golfer.R.W. Baker Co.
