Obituary of Richard E. Vargas
VARGAS, Richard E. “Lalo” of Saginaw, Michigan, passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was 70 years old. Richard E. Vargas was born on March 25, 1943, in Flint, Michigan, to the late Fidencio and Rosa (Cruz) Vargas. He married the love of his life, Sandra K. Mendoza on July 11, 1961, in Saginaw; she preceded him in death on November 7, 2009. He was a proud graduate of Saginaw High School, class of 1961. While in high school, Richard also worked as a bartender for his parents business, the Cabana Lounge. Following graduation, Richard attended GMI Institute in Chicago, pursing a degree in pattern making. Upon returning from Chicago, Richard began working for General Motors – Grey Iron Administrative Building, and continued to help with the family business. Richard then became the owner and operator of Vargas Grocery in Saginaw, retiring in 2010. Richard’s pride and joy was working on classic cars, especially his 1940 Ford Coupe, building it from the ground up. His vehicle won many awards throughout the country. Above all, Richard loved his children and granddaughter. Richard’s family will always remember him for his strong work ethic and his friendliness. He was also a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Surviving are his beloved daughter, Kimberly Ann Vargas and her special friend, Dennis Dwayne Tafoya of Saginaw, and granddaughter, Rachel (Andrew) Austin of Grand Rapids. Also surviving are four sisters-in-law as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and his dogs: Tina, Bear and Lady.
He was preceded in death by his son, James “Jimmy” Vargas and three brothers: Xavier, Diego and Angelo Vargas.
