Richard A. Mack 89, life long resident of Helts Prairie died
Monday, June 27, 2011 at Union Hospital in Terre Haute,
Indiana. Richard was born June 17, 1922 , to Forest and
Mae (Elliott) Mack. He graduated from Hillsdale High
School. He furthered his education and graduated from
Purdue University. While at Purdue, he was a member of
the Alpha Zeta Nation Agriclture Honor Society, the Purdue
Dairy Judging team and the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity.
He Married Mary Ellen Harris on April 22, 1945, in Greenwood,
Arkansas. They were married 65 wonderful years. They spent
their entire married life in Helts Prairie. Richard was a veteran
of World War II, and the Korean Conflict. He was the recipient

to his country. Richard worked for the Soil and Water

Counties. He also farmed with his brother; Leigh on the Mack
Family Farm. In retirement, he enjoyed stamp collecting and
gardening. Richard was very active in the community his entire
life. He was an active member of the National Association of
Retired Federal Employees, and Optimist’s Club. He was former
President of the Frist Ernie Pyle PTA. He also served on the
Vermillion County Library Board, Vermillion County Parks Board,
and the Hamilton Center Board. He was a 4-H leader for many

several years. He held a membership in a 10 county RC & D
Abandoned Mine Land Committee. His family wrote: His
generosity and kind heart were an inspiration to his family. He
lived his life with integrity and bravery.
Mr. Mack was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen; an
infant child, Karen Sue, and his brothers; Robert and Leigh.
He is survived by his daughter and son in-law; Kelly and Don
Weinzierl of Parrish, Florida, son and daughter in-law; Ronald
A. and Diana K (Hartman) Mack. Grandchildren; Jeremy Mack
of Cayuga, Tiffany and D.J. Lunsford of Nobleville, Kelsy
and Krissy Weinierl of Parrish Florida. Great grandchildren;
Elaina Turner Mack, sister in-law Barbara Mack, and Several
Nieces and Nephews.
