Richard Browne Darby, Normandy Beach, passed away at home on March 8th surrounded by the love of family and friends. “Darby” was born in Plainfield, NJ to Harold and Pauline Darby on September 23, 1935. He was raised in North Plainfield, the site of his Grandmother, Clara Louise and his mother, Pauline’s restaurant, the Clara Louise Tea Room. He is a graduate of The Hill School, Pottstown, PA. He graduated from Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH where he made lifelong friends at his Sigma Chi fraternity and where he played lacrosse. A veteran of the US Army, he worked in textile sales.
He then founded Darby Construction, a residential home building company specializing in historic renovations. Darby then opened the Ocean County branch office of Spherion Staffing where he worked until its sale. He created Adopt a Classroom program at the Clifton Avenue Elementary School, Lakewood where local businesses dedicated time and resources to disadvantaged children.
He was married to Mary McFarland, Point Pleasant the mother of his 3 sons, Scott, Point Pleasant, Tyler (married to Kelley) of Warrington, PA and Grant of Clearwater, FL. His wife, Eleanor Greco Darby passed away many years ago. She and Darby lived in Holmdel with his sons and Eleanor’s children, Catherine (married to Jerome) of London; Adam (married to May) of Los Angeles and Philip (married to Kelly) of Yulee, FL. He retired to his family’s beach cottage in Normandy Beach with his life partner, Victoria Fowler and their Boxer, Jersey. He cherished his summers with his grandchildren, Christopher, Shane, Isabella, Lizzie, Conner, Lily and Jack. He enjoyed starting his Tuesday Morning Breakfast Club at Meg’s, Lavallette with his retired friends. He is survived by his other grandchildren in FL; Ever, Cailan, Harper, Jordon and Kendall.
