Richard D. Chafin of Bloomington passed away at the I.U. Health Hospice House on Wednesday, April 24, 2013. He was born to Rev. W.C. and Rebecca Chafin in Bloomington. He graduated from Unionville High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Shortly after basic training he served 18 months in occupied Japan both in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

He retired from Indiana Bell Telephone after 26 years of service and was owner-operator of Centrel Com-Tel. After retirement, he enjoyed driving a school bus for Monroe County Community Schools. He was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Annalee “Ann” Payne Chafin; daughter, Deborah Chafin of Lebanon, IN; son, Chris Chafin, Bloomington; grandchildren: Amanda Chafin Guinn (Jason), Ellettsville; Nick Chafin (Megan), Knoxville, TN; Jessica Hinds Walker (Ben), Chicago; Ben Hinds, Chicago; and Elizabeth Henson, Lebanon, and great-grandchildren, Elias and Oliver Guinn of Ellettsville. He was preceded in death by siblings: Gertrude Weisheit, Madge Childs, Robert Chafin, Ruth Barrow, and Helen Hammond, Dwight Lyman Chafin, Eugene Child, and an infant brother.
