Richard Gable, 75, loving husband of Shirley (Sterpka) Gable, passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 12th, 2014 after a warrior’s battle with illness. Also known as, “Dick” “Pa” “Poppy” “Mr. Mr.” “The Big Guy” “DG” “Coach”, Richard was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He was active in the community all his life, serving in the Army Reserves from 1956-1962, as a West Hartford and Newington Police Officer for 30 years, and a beloved football and baseball coach. After six decades of coaching, winning NHS football State Championships in ’79 and ’80, and helping found Newington Midget Football in ’68, he finished his coaching career coaching with his son at Hale-Ray High School in East Haddam in 2014. Besides his wife Shirley, he is survived by his devoted children Darlene Gable, Eileen Blair and her husband Scott, Kathleen Wilcox and her husband Dave, Richie Gable and his wife Denise; and his adoring grandchildren Ben, Danny and his wife Meghan, Austin, Alex his girl Katie, A.J., Patrick, Sophie and Charlie. As an only child, through marriage, he inherited four sisters, Kathryn Fravel, Tillie Cerasoli, Maryann Nogas, Dot Sterpka and one brother, Frank “Buddy” Sterpka. As well as countless nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his mother Mary (Warchal) Gable and his father Frederick Gable. He loved going to the Little House, Lake Winnipesaukee, Florida, anywhere he could spend time with his family. Very involved with his grandchildren, he delighted in watching their sports teams, theater productions and activities. He was one-of-a-kind, the epitome of love and family, committed to the happiness and comfort of his family. His kindness and humble spirit reside within them and in cherished memories. His grandchildren aspire to make him proud, to be half the person he was in life and to touch as many lives. His greatness lives in his legacy. He is loved forever and missed. The family would like to thank the nursing staff at St. Francis for their care and compassion, especially Abbie, Muriel, Kesone, Paula and Roxine as well as Chaplain Jean.
